Disability Network

Background

Equal programmes have identified that disabled people start with a major disadvantage in employment: negative attitudes in society and in themselves. A number of Equal Development Partnerships working in different Equal themes have come together in order to share their learnings with each other in this field through an informal Disability Network. This is a chance for DPs to network and learn from each other through study visits and meetings.

Aim

The aim is to establish a network of Development Partnerships working in the disability field, to enable everyone involved to disseminate their key learnings and materials more widely and to enable good practice to reach the mainstream more quickly.

Objectives

  • To develop a Disability Network with the participation of all interested Equal Development Partnerships involved in the disability field
  • To share good practice developed during Equal
  • To disseminate materials and key policy recommendations more widely through joint mainstreaming

Target groups

Membership of the Disability Network is open to development partnerships who are working to remove barriers that prevent disabled people from entering and remaining in the workforce. The Network will give partners the opportunity to share the range of materials they have created with each other and the wider disability community.

Office for Disability Matters
The Office for Disability Issues is the focal point within government to coordinate disability policy across all departments and take forward the Life Chances Report to ensure robust implementation of its recommendations.

A New Strategy for Learning Disability for the 21st Century
People with learning disabilities are amongst the most vulnerable and socially excluded in our society. Very few have jobs, live in their own homes or have choice over who cares for them. This needs to change: people with learning disabilities must no longer be marginalised or excluded. Valuing People sets out how the Government will provide new opportunities for children and adults with learning disabilities and their families to live full and independent lives as part of their local communities.

Disability Policy
The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is an independent body established in April 2000 by Act of Parliament to stop discrimination and promote equality of opportunity for disabled people. Disabled people face massive discrimination and exclusion. For example, if they are of working age, they are twice as likely as non-disabled people to be out of work and claiming benefits. And disabled people are twice as likely to have no qualifications.

We have set ourselves the goal of "a society where all disabled people can participate fully as equal citizens".
