Use of ICT in Rural Industries
Partnership information
Description
Aim
The project sponsored the development of innovatory methods of delivery of learning for people who are prevented by distance or unsocial working hours from undertaking learning at traditional learning centres. The project explored new techniques of on-line delivery which recognised that many of the beneficiaries may have difficulties with standard text based information and require a method of delivery suited to their specific requirements.
Objectives
The key objectives were:
To support people working in rural business to develop capacity to manage change.
To support innovative collaborative learning models to address strategic objectives.
Making use of ICT to improve access for skills for adaptability in rural areas/communities.

The ‘virtual’ farm website is widely used in the region and continues to be updated weekly, providing a valuable resource for agriculture students. Other examples include: training farmers, many of whom have little previous knowledge in the use of ICT, to complete their cattle movements and environmental scheme applications on line. This method has potential benefits in greater efficiency for mandatory data collection. Another example is the use of mobile phone cameras to collect evidence in the field for land-based Vocational Qualifications and Key Skills. Removing this barrier could lead to an uptake in the use of e-portfolios for Apprentices in rural industries.
