The Redhouse Project, Black Country Communities in the Lead

Activity information

Description

This project undertook community consultation to determine what issues to tackle. The outcomes of the consultation highlighted a need for environmental and parking improvements, and better engagement of young people. All residents have had opportunities to have their say. As a result the Redhouse Estate Partnership has been established to drive the project forward, to review progress and to agree further actions and initiatives.

The project's key focus is to promote the social and economic well being of residents on the estate. It is delivering training and employment on an environmental theme, engaging primarily with young people aged 16 -25 but all age groups are encouraged to participate.

The project has been boosting the skills levels and employment opportunities of people through a range of work experience in grounds maintenance, soft landscaping, gardening, horticulture and construction. This intermediate labour market scheme tackles the environmental issues on the estate while providing a valuable training resource.

The vision is to retain a pool of skilled trainees as paid employees who will move on to establish a social enterprise which will be able to apply for contracts and procure small works from both the public and private sector.
