Career Planning Support for Young Asylum seekers, ATLAS Scotland 2 - Action for Training and Learning for Asylum Seekers

Activity information

Description

The unstable personal, social and economic circumstances of Glasgow's asylum seeker community is visible in the educational context where over 500 young people in the secondary sector appear especially vulnerable on account of a school career where fractured attendance patterns are complicated by language issues, cultural adjustment and the general uncertainty of their position within the community. As a relatively new phenomenon within the city, Careers Scotland recognise the requirement for additional and enhanced service provision to address the needs of this group. In doing so this will help to improve the consistency of Careers Schotland service delivery across the full school population. Careers Scotland intend to address this through the development of a Glasgow City focussed dedicated resource which will provide: 1. The enhancement of current service provision through school access to experienced specialist Career Advisers, familiar with the issues facing such groups, confident in working with such issues and able to provide dedicated information resources to support this 2. Develop the capacity of school pastoral care and mainstream Careers Scotland staff to deal with the issues commonly arising with young asylum seekers in the school to post school transition 3. A supportive referral system, attuned to the needs of such groups and co-ordinating access to a broad range of appropriate post school employment preparation, education and training opportunities. This will involve the negotiation and development of a close working relationship with city based service providers including Glasgow City Council, the FE colleges, the local development companies, the voluntaryh sector and other related service providers.
