Student Mentoring, COOL - Creating Opportunities for Ongoing Learning

Activity information

Description

This project aims to support vulnerable young adults as they settle into Scotland's colleges. Through a ‘training the trainers' model, we will engage with college staff and support the delivery of Mentor training for existing students within the colleges. In turn these students will act as peer mentors to new learners. In this way we plan to build the capacity of the project at 3 levels.

Activities

A programme of staff training which has been focusing on the roles and responsibilities of the mentor and on the delivery of training to prospective peer mentors. Secondly, the production of a ‘toolkit' of training materials and sample materials to support the establishment of a mentoring scheme within a college. Both of these activities have been underpining on-going support to college staff as the schemes develop.

Beneficiaries

Young learners entering Scotland's colleges who might find the transition to an adult learning environment to be problematic and who might either drop out or not achieve their potential without support. A second group of learners have been receiving training as mentors which will enhance their career prospects and encourage personal development.
