The placing of trained tutors in community settings was greatly enhanced by strong partnerships built with community based organisations including Rosemount Lifelong Learning, Maryhill CAB and Oasis Womens Group. These organisations now offer regular ESOL classes delivered by volunteer tutors.
A handbook for all volunteer tutors was developed. This provides tutors with reference material in a readily available format. Tutors also have access to a resource library, a newsletter, regular workshops and the project co-ordinator is available for ongoing support.
The project piloted an innovative approach that allows qualified tutors to “fast track” the initial part of the training. This overcomed the problem of those who have qualifications and experience having to “cover old ground” and means they are ready to tutor more quickly.
