Asylum seekers

Definition: Helping the integration of asylum seekers. Depending on the official status of the asylum seeker – an extremely complex area, with variations between Member States – assistance may be for new ways of helping to access the labour market, or to provide training for unsuccessful asylum seekers prior to their leaving the country

Theme I partnerships have been set up to support asylum seekers, and have encompassed innovative methods of teaching ESOL, developing ways of auditing and assessing the skills of asylum seekers, capacity building for voluntary organisations, and activities directed at helping asylum seekers to support each other.

Citizenship ProjectAsylum seekers who were studying at the Central College of Commerce expressed a wish to learn more about British/Scottish life and culture.

Developing Sustainable RCOs This project has been addressing the needs identified in the ASPIRE mapping of RCO (Refugee Community Organisations).

Early Access to ESOL The project was developed and delivered between Bournville College and Community Integration Partnership and was undertaken between January and March 2006.

Education and Employment WorkerWhilst waiting for a decision on their claim for refugee status, asylum seekers need information about the employment market and training opportunities to enable them to be ‘job ready’ should their claim be successful.

Equal ASPIRE Development Agency Toolkit i-SE Professional Development Centre has designed a toolkit for Development Agencies to support asylum seeker organisations in delivering Skills for Life and ESOL learning; working through volunteers and paid workers, preparing the learners for employment and citizenship, should they achieve refugee status.

ESOL and Basic Skills for Asylum SeekersThe project included several activities addressed to asylum seekers who were intendig to improve their English language skills.

ESOL for Asylum Seekers PDA Pilot for Community based asylum seeker groups This will be a new development which will allow for the CPD of volunteer workers who work with Asylum Seekers in relation to language development.

ESOL Framework ProjectIn the space of eight months in 2004, 1204 candidates obtained the new ESOL qualifications and 157 practitioners received training.

ESOL with a purpose Based on the issues identified in action 1 of ASPIRE i-SE Professional Development Centre for Skills for Life have designed and have been implementing training and other activities to support and develop existing professional development delivery of ESOL learning.

Glasgow Asylum Seekers Support Project (GASSP)GASSP appointed an Information and Advice Worker to provide specialist information and support in community based settings across the whole of Glasgow, and to increase the capacity of local centres to provide improved levels of support.

Glasgow Guide and Orientation ServiceThis project aimed to provide a holistic volunteering project to meet the short term needs of asylum seekers who required assistance with orientation, advice and support.

Going Global 2: New CitizensGlasgow Film Theatre (GFT) developed a successful education pack, Going Global, in 2003 aimed at raising awareness of asylum issues amongst schoolchildren.

Growing your own IAG The project seeks to develop and deliver training programmes for volunteers and workers in RCOs to offer appropriate information, advice and guidance to asylum seekers.
